The plantation of the long-lived

Post  Admin on Wed Jan 09, 2008 3:15 am

The long-lived ones constitute an inexhaustible resource for the gardeners, so much are varied their shapes, their foliages, the colors of their flowers or their perfumes. Once places from there, they live several years: an appreciable quality. Available out of cups almost all the year, it any more but does not remain to learn how with good to plant them…
You said long-lived?
A little reflexion

Before launching you, provided with your cups, you pose a little. The size of long-lived extends from a few centimeters to several meters (for climbing); their obstruction makes in the same way according to the varieties. Take-therefore time to think well of your solid mass. Foreground, background, association of colors or contrasts of foliages… The result will be only more beautiful!
The long-lived ones are opposed to annual and the bi-annual ones, because they last several years. Leading in spring or the summer, they develop stems and sheets then dry at the end of the autumn… for better reappearing the year according to, for a new cycle.
Caution! Even if the majority of long-lived resist quite cold, it is not the case of all. Long-lived is not synonymous with rustic…
The good period
The long-lived ones can be planted all the year. The most favorable period is probably the autumn. The still hot ground and the moisture which increases support the rooting. But one can plant in all seasons. In summer, it is necessary to be very vigilant as for watering; in winter, with the risk to repeat itself, never not to plant if it is likely to freeze.
Preliminary work
A successful plantation, it is initially a well prepared ground. Hoe, remove stones and roots.
Tear off the “bad grasses” which would compete with too your young plantations.
Loosen the ground well.
Dig the holes of plantation
It is then necessary to dig in the ground of the holes to the desired sites. The size and the tool depend on the conditioning of purchase: small dustpan for the long-lived catches out of cups, shovel with handle for those acquired out of containers.
Do not tighten too your plants: the long-lived ones push quickly; take into account the adult size (one speaks about spreading out) generally specified on the label planted in the cup.
Steeping
Make profitable the time of digging of the holes to make soak your plants, which proves to be beneficial with the recovery. With this intention, do not leave them their plastic container. Plunge them directly in a bucket or a basin filled with water.
Plant
If your plants passed good fifteen minutes in water, you can begin the plantations.
Remove perennial their bucket or container, and place in the deep holes previously drilled.
Stop while giving the ground, and pack carefully around with the dish of the hand or the end of the foot.
Water
To finish, a good watering is essential, so that the ground comes well in contact with the roots, without air pocket.
