A great principle
The summer flowering shrubs are pruned at the end of winter. This promotes shoot young wood, specifically those who bear flowers in the summer.
Conversely, the spring flowering shrubs (forsythia, lilac, etc.) are pruned after they bloom (late spring). Because they bloom on the wood of the past year, by cutting in March committing virtually all your chance to see them bring a flower!
